Julian Smith Directs and Composes Ad for 2018 Rio
Kia recently enlisted the help of YouTuber Julian Smith to compose and direct an ad spot for their 2018 Rio. The compact car has been promoted with the slogan, “Small Can Do Big”. Julian Smith fans recognized right away that the ad was a resurrected version of Julian Smith’s “Techno Jeep”, from 2011.
Julian Smith, a youtuber known for for his ridiculous comedy videos. He recorded the video “Techno Jeep” using just a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and the help of some friends. Since December 2009 it had received over 13,000,000 views. Time will tell which video has more reach. The original “Techno Jeep” was created for his fans, a fan base of 1.8 million subscribers. The ad spot for the Rio, however, has garnered over 4,000,000 since uploaded in October of 2017.
IT took two weeks to rehearse their parts and it required seven hours of filming the day of the shoot.
Smith said, “I was driving a friend of mine’s Jeep, and it just made all kinds of weird noises, I just thought these noises sounded kind of musical.”
The video took more time and effort to make than it may seem, “The sounds in this video are ACTUAL sounds from the Jeep. Everyone began rehearsing their parts 2 weeks before we shot the video. It took us 7 hours of filming to get a solid take.”
Kia has not yet released the rest of the production details for their video.
