In 2007, race horse Jockey Andrew Lakeman was suddenly paralyzed from the waist down when one of the horses in a Belmont Park race accident fell on him. How can you continue when life knocks you down and you can’t get back up? Lakeman fought through a long recovery to become a racehorse trainer.
“Horses are a mirror to your soul. They have feelings, you know? They understand you.”
“He’s a good horseman, that’s for sure,” remarked Allen Jerkens, a Hall of Fame trainer and former employer. “With the few horses he’s had, he’s really done well. Naturally, I’m rooting for him with all my heart.”
